Ultrasound sonar

A secondary school revision resource for Edexcel GCSE Physics about waves and the Earth, ultrasound and infrasound. Sonar is used on ships and submarines to detect fish or the sea bed. A pulse of ultrasound is sent out from the ship.

It bounces off the seabed or shoal of fish and the echo is detected. Ultrasound is the name given to sound waves that have frequencies greater than 2000Hz (kHz).

This is above the normal hearing range for humans,.

The measured travel time of Sonar pulses in water is strongly dependent on the temperature and the salinity of the water.

Ultrasonic ranging is also applied for measurement in air and for short distances. For example, hand-held ultrasonic measuring tools can rapidly measure the layout of rooms. SODAR (an upward looking in-air sonar ) is used for atmospheric investigations. The term sonar is also used for the equipment used to generate and receive the sound.

The acoustic frequencies used in sonar systems vary from very low (infrasonic) to extremely high ( ultrasonic ). Photo: A typical side-scan sonar towfish. Applications: Ultrasound , Sonar , and Medical Imaging. Sound waves reflect off different materials differently (when the reflections are collecte they can provide information and images). Ultrasound imaging is based on the same principles involved in the sonar used by bats, ships and fishermen.

Watch Lecture, Many important and useful applications of sound propagation exist. One such example is SONAR , which is an acronym for sound navigation ranging. Ultrasound scans are commonly used today and expectant mothers have several choices. Topic: Ultrasound Why is ultrasound used in sonar ? The reflection of sound waves has many uses. How Ultrasound Imaging Works - Duration: 4:14.

One other major difference is that medical . Sonar , short for Sound Navigation and Ranging, is helpful for exploring and mapping the ocean because sound waves travel farther in the water than do radar and light waves. NOAA scientists primarily use sonar to develop nautical charts, locate underwater hazards to navigation, search for and map . What is Abdominal Ultrasound ( Sonar )? An ultrasound test produces pictures of the inside of the human body using sound waves. It is used to examine organs and blood vessels in the abdomen, including the kidneys, liver, gallbladder, spleen and pancreas.
