Experiments for an introductory physics course

An experimental approach to birefringence has been developed for the introductory physics course. The experiments enable students to explore quantitatively the relationship between birefringence (or retardation) and the colors transmitted through birefringent material between crossed polarizers. The pinhole-camera experiment serves as an introduction to geometrical and physical optics as well as the theory and practice of photographic processing.

Factors affecting exposure, density, and resolution may be studied experimentally with this inexpensive piece of equipment. Index Terms Circuits, inquiry-base laboratory, physics.

PRESENT SITUATION AND STRATEGY.

In recent years much effort has gone into trying to understand the causes .

Student Programming in the Introductory Physics Course : M. Some of the subjects investigated by students in conjunction with our calculus-based physics course include:. The Department of Physics offers three sequences of introductory calculus-based courses designed to meet the needs of different majors. Activity-based collisional analysis is developed for introductory physics and astronomy laboratory experiments.

Simple drop experiments enable determination of the . Cornell Physics Education Research Lab. My introductory physics labs were… Complete this sentence:. The demonstration of experiments during lectures and hands-on experimentation are essential parts of the introductory physics courses.

Lecture experiments can be reserved by the lecturers. They are set up in the lecture hall and can then be . The content of the course and the particular experiments to be carried out are chosen to be especially useful for students who intend to work in the health sciences. Specific topics will range from mechanics to nuclear and atomic physics. The principle of science, the definition, almost, is the following: The test of all knowledge is experiment.

About half of the experiments were computerized. We did not find an appropriate version for the other half to meet our overall goal. But what is the source of knowledge?

Where do the laws that are to be tested come . Perfect for the freshman physics first course , or up to 11th grade.
