Extensive variable

Physical properties of materials and systems can often be categorized as being either intensive or extensive quantities, according to how the property changes when the size (or extent) of the system changes. According to IUPAC, an intensive property is one whose magnitude is independent of the size of the system. These forces and their associated displacements are called conjugate variables.

The thermodynamic force is always an intensive variable and the displacement is always an extensive variable , yielding an extensive energy transfer. The intensive (force) variable is the derivative of the internal energy with respect to the .

A variable which is independent of the quantity of material present (e.g., density , specific heat , temperature T, pressure P).

Extensive variables depend on the amount of material.

Intensive variables are independent of the amount of material. Before going into detail about this, however, a little explanation of the notation about studying Thermal properties. Bring the bodies together, what is the result? The value of an extensive variable (e.g., volume, mass, energy, enthalpy, electric charge, etc) depends on the size of the system. An extensive variable can be expressed as the sum of the quantities for the separate subsystems that compose the entire system.

Sometimes, to that list are appended other extensive state variables , for example electric dipole . State functions do not depend on the path by which the system arrived at its present state. A state function describes the . Clausius created the term entropy as an extensive thermodynamic variable that was shown to be useful in . Not only in case of an ideal gas, but in all cases entropy is an extensive variable. However molar entropy or specific entropy are intensive variable. Thermodynamics Variables are either extensive or intensive. To illustrate the difference between these kings of variables, think of mass and density.

The mass of an object depends on the amount of material in the object, the density does not . Mass is an extensive variable , density is an intensive variable. Methods Serum of ACPA-positive RA patients was fractionated by size exclusion chromatography and analysed for the presence of ACPA-IgG by ELISA.

The extent of remyelination was variable between cases. Therefore, unlike the extensive variable heat capacity , which depends on the quantity of material, specific heat is an intensive variable and . The American Astronomical Society. A NEW EXTENSIVE CATALOG OF OPTICALLY VARIABLE ACTIVE GALACTIC NUCLEI IN. Exploration of the core and variable dimensions of extensive reading research and pedagogy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biochemical variables in newborn lambs of an extensive rearing system.

In this study, multiparous ewes, with simple parturition, and their lambs were used.
