Series motor starter

The main concept behind every DC motor starter is adding external resistance to the armature winding during starting. In order to start the motor , the spring-loaded starter handle is moved from OFF to the first stud position. At this point, the first resistor (Rabove) provides high starting resistance, as CEMF has not yet developed.


And for this particular reason the motor becomes extremely essential as starter motors for most industrial applications dealing in heavy mechanical load like huge cranes or large metal chunks etc. This limitation to the starting current of DC motor is brought about by means of the starter.

They can be operated locally or remotely by either manual or automatic pilot devices.

In series motors , a linear relationship exist between the current flowing through the field windings and the amount of torque produced.

As heavy currents flow through the very thick series field windings, large torques are produced in series motors. This feature makes series motors to be used as starter motors for industrial .
