Difference between distance and displacement

To understand the distinction between distance and displacement , you must know the definitions. When an object changes its direction of motion, displacement takes this direction . It is the interval between points, and describes how much ground is actually covered between two or more points. Total distance would be calculated by adding all the intervals . It is therefore also the shortest distance between two points.

If the displacement vector is away from the reference point (aka datum) it is often defined as positive and if toward it is .

The primary difference between distance and displacement is that distance is the actual length of the path covered by someone or something, but displacement is the length of the shortest route between the starting and ending points.

Since the displacement is measured along the shortest path between two points, its magnitude is always less than or equal to the distance. The answer to this question is, It depends.
